Building on the theoretical foundations established in the previous chapter, we propose a conceptual framework for analysing safety at the station and its context in the city. Based on systems thinking, we propose identifying key dimensions that influence station safety: (a) the internal physical and social environment of the station, (b) the condition of surrounding neighbourhoods—including their socio-economic makeup—and (c) the station’s strategic role within the city’s overall layout as well as the regional, national, and the global context. The station, viewed as a system, may exhibit non-uniform safety conditions across different temporal scales, such as peak and off-peak hours and day versus night traffic. This framework addresses the safety needs of different groups of travellers and recognises stations as a hyperspace. This framework serves as a theoretical foundation and aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) encompassing the physical and social environment, digital technologies, place management, and stakeholder engagement to foster safer station settings for and with various stakeholders.
