Growing concerns about women’s safety in public spaces, particularly due to the heightened risk of sexual violence in these places, have sparked significant academic interest. Both direct and indirect experiences of victimisation shape women’s fear in public environments. However, most transport policies remain gender-neutral, overlooking the specific vulnerabilities women face in their daily lives. Based on a case study of municipalities in southern Sweden, this chapter examines women’s transit safety, focusing on their experiences between home and transit stations. It explores how individual and environmental factors influence women’s vulnerability and safety perceptions of public spaces. Using a systems-thinking approach, we highlight interconnected elements that must be addressed to improve women’s safety. We emphasise that effective strategies require coordinated efforts by policymakers, urban planners, and transportation authorities across multiple planning dimensions.
