Addressing food loss and waste (FLW) is required for sustainable food systems. This chapter explores the multifaceted nature of FLW interventions, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach that considers the interconnectedness of food systems. We discuss the importance of selecting appropriate interventions, defining success metrics, and understanding the role of value chain actors in FLW reduction. Adopting a value chain approach to design and assess interventions will facilitate consideration of the distribution of costs and benefits among different actors. Fostering more inclusive and sustainable FLW interventions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, will require coordination among governments, civil society, and the private sector to address information and knowledge gaps and promote the adoption of effective strategies that support the inclusion of informal value chain actors, particularly, women. Ultimately, the goal is to enhance food system sustainability across multiple dimensions, including nutrition and health, economic well-being, and environmental impact.
