The Way Forward: Setting a Food Loss and Waste Policy Agenda
摘要
To effectively address food loss and waste (FLW), a comprehensive approach is needed that considers various factors, including the specific context of food systems, the diversity of actors involved, and the multiple objectives of stakeholders. Key policy strategies to reduce FLW involve targeting both the demand and supply sides of the food system. Demand-side interventions include increasing demand for nutritious and safe foods and supporting the development of markets for cosmetically imperfect foods. Supply-side policies focus on supporting investments in infrastructure, technology, and capacity building, for value chain actors to improve food handling, storage, and distribution practices. Additionally, creating enabling policy and regulatory frameworks that incentivize FLW reduction, such as sustainable procurement policies, food safety standards, and labeling regulations, is necessary. By implementing a combination of these strategies, it is possible for UN agencies and national governments to set evidence-based policy agendas to reduce FLW, improve food security, and contribute to more sustainable food systems.
