Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Israel’s genocidal violence in Gaza warrant quantitative and qualitative research on the fallout of these two wars in the Balkans. Unlike the Russian war against Ukraine, however, this study concludes that the “Palestinian question” reverberates deeper in state-building issues and contested nationhood and borderlands in the Balkans. At the heart of a burgeoning geopolitical crisis and the weaponisation of memory and history, this conclusion highlights the risk of obscuring a far more extensive history of solidarities between Jews and Muslims in the Balkans due to vested interests in domestic politics and diplomatic relations. Yet the pro-Palestinian campaigns of the Balkan solidarity network help us rethink the current unsettling events through political categories by leaving behind the dominating narratives of ethnic and religious hatred.
