Study on Mangrove Ecosystem in Northern Kerala by Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques

Mangroves, often referred to as “the protectors of the coastline,” serve as a natural barrier between land and sea. However, they are increasingly threatened by population pressure, pollution from solid and industrial waste, petroleum products, freshwater diversion, and other human activities. These factors have significantly impacted mangrove swamps, making their monitoring essential for environmental conservation. This study focuses on characterizing mangroves in the Kannur district of Kerala. Findings indicate that most mangrove vegetation is concentrated along backwater channels and the banks of estuarine water bodies, appearing as patches or narrow continuous belts. Satellite-derived remote sensing images were employed to map mangrove areas using image classification and NDVI techniques with Sentinel-2 data. Additionally, Google Earth images were utilized to extract mangrove distribution from existing formations. Mangroves were specifically identified in locations such as the Kumbla and Shiriya backwaters, Chandragiri backwater, Pallam, Kunhimangalam, Velichangool, and Vellikkeel. Remote sensing and GIS techniques were used to estimate mangrove vegetation, providing quantitative insights into its spatial distribution. The study also observed a progressive increase in mangrove vegetation in certain areas, largely attributed to plantation efforts by the Forest Department. Overall, this research contributes to understanding the status of mangroves in Kannur, aiding in the conservation of this fragile ecosystem.
