Plastic pollution in oceans and rivers is a growing environmental threat, and deposition on riverbanks, deltas, beaches, and the Sea is developing rapidly. It is estimated that 60% of all plastics produced have been wasted in the natural environment. Aquatic life, ecosystems, and human health are all threatened by plastic waste. Because of improper management as well as disposal practices, plastic waste’s vital quantity goes into natural environment via different pathways moreover causes major environmental pollution. Current research emphasizes distribution, availability, as well as season’s impact on microplastic distribution in sediments from 2021 to 2023 on the continental shelf off the Puducherry coast, a Union territory of India. Research result reveals prevelance of microplastics in the marine bottom sediments ranged between 5.25 ± 4.774 and 12 ± 10.469particles/kg−1. Microplastics’ size isolated from the bottom sediments from the study areas was found to have ranged between 60 µm and 800 µm. A total of 734 particles were observed from bottom sediments out of which fiber was observed most dominant in the study. The availability of polymers was specific to the coastal zone. The presence of Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET-G) and Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in the Puducherry marine environment aligns with the region’s status as a tourist hotspot, introducing the possibility of these polymers originating could be tourist-related activities.
