This study aimed to explore how environmental biotechnology can revolutionise waste management by providing sustainable and innovative solutions to the global waste crisis. The exponential increase in waste production, driven by urbanisation, industrialisation and population growth, has proven challenging to manage using traditional waste management methods such as landfilling and incineration. This research discussed technological advancements such as anaerobic digestion, bioengineered microorganisms and enzyme degradation, which facilitate waste-to-resource conversion, reduce environmental impacts and promote a circular economy. The integration of bioinformatics and machine learning can further optimise the efficiency of the bioremediation processes by addressing specific waste challenges. This study underscored biotechnology’s potential to transform waste into valuable resources while addressing technical, regulatory and infrastructural barriers to build a cleaner, more sustainable world.
