The fieldwork site for this study is Shawo Town, located in Dongming County, southwest Shandong Province, China. This town is my native place, which has significantly influenced the first half of my life. I still cherish this well-loved land, not only because it is the place where my parents raised me and my brothers and sisters love me, but also because they are unadorned and enthusiastic villagers. Moreover, it will serve as the starting point of my academic research in the next phase in my life. In my previous study, I described a special group of people in this land—witches, or Xiangtong in the local dialect. After all these years, I am still fascinated by the daily practices of local people, their religious activities, and the human and cosmic views that support their lives. The aim of this “born and raised” fieldwork is to try to reveal the structural diagrams, philosophical meanings, and social cosmologies of these daily and religious practices. Although I no longer recognize myself, I am keenly aware that there are many similar places in the vast expanse of my homeland. It is the first thing to explain the location and the thorough investigation, which can also help me to maintain a conscious link between the knowledge of the local populace and the regional society with a slightly broader geographical scope.
