While domestic violence has gained increasing recognition as a public problem, children as victim-survivors are often marginalized in media reporting and public responses. Largely rendered as ‘witnesses’ to domestic abuse or extensions of their parents, children remain sidelined in adult-centric media coverage and legal responses to domestic violence, seldom recognized as direct victim-survivors. This chapter examines the cultural construction of children in discourses of domestic violence and their implications for policy and practice.
