Race is an invention. But racism is real. This chapter engages children’s experience living in a globalizing Australian society in which a significant proportion of young people have a parent born overseas or were born overseas themselves. Despite this demographic reality, right-wing extremism and ethnonationalism flourish. This chapter will examine the ways that ‘third culture kids’ in Sydney’s outer suburbs are answering back to xenophobia and racist stereotypes through bell hooks’ (Talking back: Thinking Feminist, Thinking Black. Routledge, 2014) idea of ‘coming to voice’, by a greater participation in the public space through creative writing and arts programs, to demonstrate how talking up their own experiences can facilitate a stronger sense of self-worth beyond mere citizenship.
