In this changed context, it is the institutions constructed by the Founding Fathers that are becoming the principal longer-term source of fragility—quite possibly destabilizing the country’s governing. Given the resources America could develop within its boundaries, the minimally modified Constitution of 1787 was ideal for facilitating economic advantage to bolster military potential. This was in a world where, from the later eighteenth century, the scale of mobilizations was transformed. It was stimulated by pre-existing internal developments. They included: the emergence of populist-style politics from about 2010, and also greater violenceViolence associated with various actions linked, both directly and indirectly, to politics, and the end of a 60-year period when mass communicationsCommunications were “canalized”. All this would be accompanied by much-increased partisanship in electoral politics and indirectly in the overall behaviour of American judiciariesJudiciaries. One result was that through its military defeat, many of the SouthSouth’s advantages in America were dissipated.
