This book focusses on the rise of greater political instability in the United States, especially since about 2010, and why it always emerges periodically there. With Donald Trump[aut]Trump, Donald reclaiming the PresidencyPresidency, 2025 became an appropriate time to focus on the issue. The transformation is discussed in the context of American political developments since the colonial era, and by comparison with other countries over time. The sheer number of institutions engaged with aspects of ruling always generated complexity within America’s various political units. Unsurprisingly, because of constitutional structureStructures, the United States Supreme CourtCourts has among the strongest powers of judicial review in the world, as well as many interactions between lawyersLawyers and politics. From the outset, different views about those conventions and understandings were often linked partly to a Justice’s own political partisanship. Since about 2010, America exhibits considerably more evidence of instability than it did earlier. Indeed, following his second inauguration, Donald Trump[aut]Trump, Donald increased fears of that continuing. Whether they will be realized is a separate matter, but unquestionably, by mid-2025, various aspects of political instability seemed much strengthened.
