After planning and initiating the massacres of the Armenians, the Turkish government spared no effort to keep the civilized world in the dark. It took every opportunity to deny, with the utmost impudence, any news of the massacres that leaked to the wider world. But foreigners, especially American consuls, found ways to inform the American Embassy of the events on the ground, which caused great consternation among Turkish officials.
