The Turkish government, to justify the deportations and massacres of the Armenians – these two words were synonymous – argued that such measures were necessary to preserve national security. The authorities claimed that the Armenians had planned a general uprising, and with this goal in mind, were preparing to cut off the supply and communication lines of the Turkish army, in order to facilitate the entry of enemy forces, especially Russian forces, into Turkey.
