This chapter, based on (Boghi A. Cryosurgery, Software for predicting the lesion produced in the tissue, Second Level Master’s thesis, University of Rome Tor Vergata, A.A, 2007–2008), presents the clinical and physiological aspects of cryosurgery and the advantages it offers in the treatment of various diseases. The overview of imaging techniques shows the importance of monitoring the progress of the ice front. Cryoprobes, the various mechanisms of cold generation, and the circumscription of the ice front using cryo-heating techniques are illustrated, as well as the physics of freezing and some simplified solutions. Mathematical modeling is essential to overcome the limitations of imaging techniques in monitoring the ice front. Finally, a calculation code, developed in 1976 and subsequently modified in 2007 for the prediction of the ice front’s progress, is presented.
