E-Waste: An Overview of Sources, Properties, and Environmental Consequences

Electronic waste, commonly known as e-waste, is a significant concern due to its impacts on the environment and human health. This chapter discussed in detail the different e-waste sources, their characteristics, and environmental impacts. As technology advances, electronic waste sources like phones and computers, which are outdated, and discarded appliances like refrigerators and TVs get replaced very frequently, leading to the growing pile of e-waste. The main concern of e-waste is its composition, containing hazardous elements like lead, mercury, cadmium, and organic pollutants like flame retardants, PAHs, PCBs, and dioxin-related compounds, which need to be handled properly. Outdated or broken medical devices, such as diagnostic machines, patient monitors, and other healthcare electronics, generate e-waste. When this e-waste is dumped in landfills or burned, it causes soil and air pollution. If this e-waste is not disposed of adequately, it leads to the release of harmful chemicals into the environment, causing adverse health effects. In many developing countries, e-waste is often processed in informal settings where workers are exposed to dangerous chemicals without adequate protection. This can result in severe health issues, including respiratory problems and neurological damage. Through a detailed review of present data and research, this chapter aims to provide a clear understanding of the e-waste implications for sustainable development. It is important to discuss in detail the e-waste so that its usage can be reduced and the new trend of replacing them frequently is not followed, to reduce e-waste generation.
