This chapter examines how metaversal technologies are involved in the reconfiguration of spatiality, particularly on the level of virtualization and datafication. We first discuss how ‘tech’ companies conceptualize space in relation to their own business interests, generally by setting up virtual worlds and gaming platforms that draw in various social activities as well as give rise to new forms of labour and monetization. Next, we show how virtualization processes, such as the employment of game engines and the creation of digital twins, are positioning ‘tech’ companies as a central infrastructure across various industries. Last, we discuss how wearable VR and AR devices are used to capture physical spaces through virtualization and datafication, and what the implications of this are for the development of emergent AI systems.
