This part focuses both on the long-dominant critical-liberal approach of the strong state tradition thesis,along with updated versions that utilise new developmentalism and competitive authoritarianism, dominant concepts in studies on recent politics in and on Turkey, and on those approaches’ representatives and some prominent followers. It introduces both the ways in which the mentioned approaches update themselves, their concepts and arguments, and what is “new” in these in their examinations of Turkey since 2011.
