In this chapter, we explore the use of navigated TMS in the treatment of major depressive disorder. We begin with the proposed neurophysiologic underpinnings of MDD. We then outline how TMS has been commonly used to treat MDD without navigation and summarize the potential benefits of using navigated TMS. We conclude by exploring the future direction of TMS treatment of depression and the novel possibilities that navigated TMS creates.
