The agroforestry system (AFS) is a dynamic, ecologically-centered approach to managing natural resources, featuring a deliberate strategy that systematically integrates trees, crops, and livestock. These systems can be categorized based on key components, structural arrangements, functional attributes, socio-economic foundations, and ecological characteristics. This classification enhances our understanding and utilization of the diverse practices within agroforestry (AF). By methodically incorporating trees into agricultural landscapes, a wide range of tangible benefits emerge across environmental, economic, and social dimensions for stakeholders at all levels. This simultaneously promotes diverse and sustainable production methods. The initiation of this chapter highlights the potential interactions and diversified functions of AF as a strategic tool to enhance sustainable land-use practices, positioning it as a game changer. This section explores how AFS contribute to sustainable land use by addressing the three pillars of sustainability—environmental, economic, and social. AFS play a vital role in promoting sustainable land utilization across these three pillars by fostering carbon sequestration, improving soil health through nitrogen fixation, actively contributing to climate change mitigation, and boosting farmer income levels. The chapter delves into the transformative capacity of AF practices, aligning them with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These practices have the potential to significantly enhance global food and nutritional security through sustainable land-use methods.
