The adoption of climate-smart practices, such as agroforestry (AF), is crucial for achieving net-zero emissions in the face of global warming. Offering payments for ecosystem services, such as carbon (C) credits, can incentivize farmers to improve their agroforestry systems (AFS). To ensure success, research, development, and extension services must be prioritized. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of global investment in these areas, particularly to C credits in AFS. This chapter examines the current state of research, development, and extension services aimed at boosting C credits in AFS, emphasizing their importance in regions such as Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, and Asia. Successful initiatives like the Kenya Agriculture Carbon Project and the Dream Fund Program have demonstrated the positive impact of these services on C credit generation and poverty reduction. Moving forward, future research should focus on integrating these services into C credit initiatives in developing countries while also advocating for supportive policies.
