Indonesia, the largest tropical forested archipelago in the world, can both be a victim and a healer of the world’s climate crisis. Agroforestry (AF), a technique that integrates agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry, plantations, beekeeping, and forestry, has become a key strategy for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, primarily due to its sustainability. This chapter examines the importance of AF concerning carbon (C) monetization in Indonesia. AF offers multiple ecological and economic benefits, including reducing C emissions, conserving biodiversity, and increasing farmers’ income. Case studies from various regions of Indonesia have shown that AF practices can enhance long-term carbon sequestration (Cseq) while providing additional income opportunities for farmers through C schemes. AF is one of the C reduction projects that can be funded through C trading in Indonesia. However, concerns about the effectiveness and fairness of the C trading mechanism remain, and Indonesia has reduced its forest C credits due to regulatory issues. Efforts to monetize C through AF require collaboration between the government, financial institutions, and farmers. Ensuring financial sustainability is essential to incentivize farmers to maintain and preserve their agroforestry systems.
