Effect of Tire-Derived Aggregate Form on Ballast Abrasion Using Los Angeles Abrasion Test and 3D Image Analysis

The increasing waste tire disposals and the environmental impact of quarried ballasts have raised interest in utilizing end-of-life tires as an alternative and sustainable material in railway ballast applications. However, the influence of the form of tire-derived aggregates (TDA) on ballast remains problematic. This study aims to investigate the deterioration of ballast by combining different forms of TDA (disk and cube) using the Los Angeles Abrasion test. The changes in particle shape throughout the abrasion process can be quantified by integrating 3D scanning. The results showed that, during the first hundred drum turns, the form of TDA admixture did not exhibit the influence of the reduction in ballast deterioration. With more angularity, TDA in cube form significantly influenced the overall degradation behavior of the ballast mixture, compared to disk form. This study provides the basis for optimizing TDA processing techniques and ballast mixtures and has great potential for further studies related to ballast mixtures with TDA.
