This essay explores four primary spatial orientations related to the sacred heritage of the River Ganga, past and present. After introducing its mythic and historical significance, we consider the implicit spatial orientations of contemporary scientific and cultural discourse. The chapter then turns to four explicit spatial orientations in sacred river heritage—immersion at ghats, crossings at tīrthas, struggles upstream, and flows downstream. Riverfront ghats are destinations for ritual prayers, bathing, and cremation. Tīrthas mark historic sites for safe river crossings and related ritual passages. Journeys upstream are inherently struggles of various kinds compared to energy-releasing downstream river flows. Each orientation faces tensions between purity and pollution. In practice, river experience mixes struggle, flow, immersion, and crossing in sacred, and sometimes problematic, ways that a geographical perspective helps comprehend.
