The four giant Galilean moons of Jupiter present a miniature solar system circling the largest planet. Technologies from Lockheed/Martin’s “Mars Base Camp” can be applied to the long journey into the outer solar system, where astronauts will find violent volcanoes on Io, cryovolcanoes on Europa, ridged wilderness on Ganymede and unusual ice buttes on Callisto. Past and future probes include the Voyagers, Galileo Orbiter, Jupiter Ice Moons Explorer (JuICE) and Europa Clipper. Crews will face daunting flight times unless advanced propulsion, now under study, can be used. Radiation issues can be addressed with a variety of strategies.
