The Lunar Gateway space station is designed to enable lunar surface activities, but it is only part of a bustling cislunar architecture and economy envisioned by designers. Part of that economy will include the Moon’s “rare earths” and other valuable resources. But to operate on the Moon’s surface for long periods will require habitats. These structures will eventually evolve into future settlements linked by services like Lunanet and serviced by lunar navigation systems like Moonlight.
