During the Second World War, the Partisans, as a communist resistance movement on the territory of Yugoslavia, received widespread support and affection of women. Their policy of winning over the population, especially women, and promises of equality and social change, proved to be more successful than the policy of the royalist resistance movement, namely the Chetniks. While the Chetniks didn’t pay much attention to women’s freedoms and rights and only turned to organizing and winning over women at a late stage of the war, the Partisans were more active in attracting women, but they also controlled the women’s organization and the extent of their participation in combat units. The women recognized and used the space that the Partisans opened up for them. Although participation in the war brought them great suffering, torture, and death, the women accepted these risks, and by joining the Partisans, they made an immense and powerful contribution to victory over fascism and the fight for their rights.
