Navigating Digital Transformation: Opportunities and Challenges for Public Service Media in Norway, Denmark, the UK, Germany, and Greece
摘要
This chapter aims to enlighten the contemporary discussion about how the platformization phenomenon has disrupted the context in which public service media (PSM) organizations operate by focusing on selected broadcasting markets: Norway, Denmark, the UK, Germany, and Greece. Platformization is recognized as a driving force of challenges and opportunities, calling for a repositioning strategy by PSM organizations to ensure sustainability. After analyzing the rising popularity of Internet-streamed entertainment TV and news online platforms and presenting recommender systems as an unprecedented challenge, this chapter raises the question regarding to what extent PSM organizations in the selected European countries acknowledge platformization as a structural dimension of their operation and public values. The analysis draws on statistical data and compilation of policy documents/reports information from secondary sources, which is conducive to offering the necessary insight. Based on the findings, we propose potential strategic steps for PSM sustainability against a backdrop of new relationship patterns between the digital audience and the audiovisual content provider. We acknowledge that streaming and on-demand user modes of audiovisual content consumption carry challenges and opportunities for the broadcasting industry that PSM organizations must creatively (re) assess.
