Many parents look to complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) as a way of avoiding typical medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), minimizing medication dose and/or side effects, or augmenting traditional management of ADHD. The reported prevalence of use varies widely from 12 to 68% with families often not disclosing use of these medications or practices to their child’s doctor (Bader and Adesman, Curr Opin Pediatr. 24:760–769, 2012). CAM approaches include a wide variety of interventions, ranging from substances ingested by the patient (e.g., diets, nutrients, “detoxifying” substances) to actions or activities performed by or on the patient (e.g., yoga, exercise, biofeedback, sensory therapy). In this chapter, we briefly summarize the myriad CAM approaches and what is known about their effectiveness in ADHD and their safety. We include a comprehensive table of medications, practices, and efficacy and concerns in this chapter.

摘要
