Behavioral and Therapeutic Treatment of ADHD in Adolescents
摘要
This chapter explores non-pharmacological approaches to managing ADHD in adolescents. Although the use of medication and school supports are the most frequently used approaches in the treatment of ADHD, providers should not overlook the importance of behavioral and therapeutic interventions when caring for all individuals with ADHD. Psychosocial interventions for ADHD are classified into three major categories: behavioral interventions (parent training, classroom management and peer interventions), skills training (organization training, cognitive training, neurofeedback training), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT has not been shown to be efficacious in the management of ADHD, but it may provide some relief for co-occurring conditions often manifesting in youth with ADHD. Physical activity may also have positive effects on oppositional defiant symptoms, mood and peer interactions in this cohort.
