Fetal facial clefts are among the most common congenital anomalies. They develop as a result of both genetic and environmental influences and have a prevalence of about 1:500 to 1:1000 live births (Hawkes N. BMJ 344:e2372, 2012; Cash C, Set P, Coleman N. Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol 18:432–436, 2001; Tonni G, Centini G, Rosignoli L. Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol Endod 100:420–426, 2005; Dixon MJ, Marazita ML, Beaty TH. Nat Rev Genet 12:167–178, 2011). The common forms of cleft lip (CL), cleft palate (CP), and cleft lip and palate (CLP) involve disruption of tissue planes above the lip going through the nares and/or the palate.
