IRE is still an evolving technique in the spectrum of local ablative tumour treatments. It is a non-thermal method using electric pulses to impair a cell’s transmembrane potential and thereby leads to cell death by causing pores within the lipid bilayer. When compared to well-established thermal ablation techniques such as MWA, IRE provides several advantages: (1) IRE is highly focused and enables a clear distinction between target and non-target tissues; (2) proximity to critical structures such as major blood vessels, bile ducts, nerves, or renal pelvis not as problematic as in other techniques as the “heat sink effect” and thermal injury are no limiting factors in this non-thermal technique. Hence, IRE is considered a promising alternative in lesions in which thermal ablation is otherwise considered limited or even impossible. However, the reported efficacy of IRE varies widely and more data are needed for a final assessment of its role in cancer treatment.
