There are numerous local ablation techniques available for CT- and MR-guided tumor treatment. The most widely used techniques are radiofrequency ablation and microwave ablation. However, laser ablation (also known as LITT—“Laser Induced Thermal Therapy”, ILT—“interstitial laser thermotherapy”) (Vogl TJ et al., Invest Radiol 48:406–412, 2013; Di Costanzo et al., World J Hepatol 6:704–715, 2014) is another well-established technique for the treatment of solid tumors. Laser ablation procedures are very effective, but are used less frequently in clinical routine due to the higher equipment costs, among other reasons. Percutaneous laser ablation of the liver in particular has been largely abandoned, but—among other indications—still plays a role for ablation in thyroid nodules or breast cancer (Gendvilaite et al., Endokrynol Pol 74:128–134, 2023; Schwartzberg et al., Ann Surg Oncol 25:2958–2964, 2018).
