Microwave Ablation Beyond Liver and Lung
摘要
Besides its main application in the treatment of lung and liver tumors, MWA can also be useful for other tumor entities. Experience has been gained primarily for the ablation of benign thyroid nodules, adrenal mass lesions, and bone metastases. However, randomized studies comparing local ablation vs. resection or radiation therapy are lacking. Accordingly, there is a complete lack of anchoring these indications in national or international guidelines. Therefore, interdisciplinary indication setting is of particular importance for these applications of local ablative procedures. On the other hand, local ablation is a safe and effective treatment option for patients who are not eligible for surgical resection or who reject it, or who have been treated with radiation therapy. It is important to clearly define the respective goal of local ablation in terms of cure or palliation in conversation with the patient.
