Nodal and pedal magnetic resonance (MR) lymphangiography as well as CT lymphangiography (CTL) are promising new minimally-invasive tools yielding diagnostic information on central lymphatic anatomy, flow as well as pathologies. Nodal MRL is the logistically and technically most demanding modality. However, it yields unparalleled depiction of the central lymphatic system with a high temporal resolution. Nodal CTL can serve as a logistically simpler alternative, but at the cost of considerable radiation exposure and therefore inferior temporal resolution. Several techniques for validation of an adequate needle positioning for nodal MRL and CTL have been described, the simplest and best evaluated being injection of saline solution on ultrasound. Finally, pedal MRL is the technically simplest diagnostic alternative, forgoing the need for needle placement in lymph nodes and can therefore also be performed when no nodes are detectable.
