In this chapter, we focus on acoustic waveform design. We begin by introducing the physics governing the propagation of acoustic signals in air and solid media, highlighting the key differences between these two channel types. Building on this understanding of channel properties, we present typical acoustic waveforms used for communication and sensing, analyzing the advantages and trade-offs of each design choice. Finally, we summarize the key challenges and considerations in waveform design.
