Chapter 4 takes the reader to my neighbourhood and introduces five tenants that live here. In the second half of the chapter, I interpret their stories, exploring different processes of subjectivation between alienation and appropriation in the neighbourhood. I show how their belonging operates through multiple scales of home, shaped by the rhythms of urban restructuring, intersecting with different temporalities of tenants’ lives. With their diverse temporalities of belonging, also their strategies of appropriation differ, in turn affecting their identification with space, their will to struggle against secondary exploitation, and their relationships to others, with whom they could do so; in short, class composition and decomposition. I conclude that neoliberal urban restructuring deepens and expands class divisions by affecting tenants differently through its spatialized form of accumulation.
