This chapter is dedicated to the conceptual approach of my study of Leipzig’s urban restructuring, which distinguishes it from most urban scholarship. The analysis departs from the angle of class composition. This means, I take class relations as drivers of change and ask how class is politically and economically constructed and transforming. I spell out what a class perspective on neoliberal urban restructuring implies theoretically, and why I consider this perspective both academically relevant and politically important for a study of Leipzig and potentially other restructuring cities. The chapter begins by a discussion on the role of class in urban scholarship and moves on to an elaboration of the Operaist and Marxist feminist lenses. I explain different Operaist terms of class composition, dialogue them with a feminist perspective on class stratification and show how I rework them to study neoliberal urbanization. The chapter ends by illustrating how the book brings together the different introduced layers of class composition and decomposition through empirical study, as parts of a dialectical whole of neoliberal urban restructuring.
