Fostering a Student-in-the-Loop Approach in Interactions with Generative Artificial Intelligence in Online Discussions
摘要
In the contemporary online teaching and learning landscape, asynchronous online discussions have become a standard part of many online courses. The recent explosion of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies makes it possible for students to complete many traditional asynchronous discussion assignments with minimal or no effort, resulting in reduced engagement and, perhaps, reduced learning. In this chapter, we propose an innovative approach of combining generative learning strategies and elements from authentic learning in the design of asynchronous online discussions that foster meaningful student engagement and learning, even in the presence of GenAI tools. We provide background information on online discussions, GenAI, generative learning strategies, and authentic learning, along with suggestions for the design of meaningful asynchronous online discussions that uphold their pedagogical integrity in the face of evolving technological advancements. These include, but are not limited to, introducing complexity by requiring students to add personal details that necessitate human input, and offering opportunities for students to engage in reflective practices about their learning while collaborating with GenAI. Specific examples are also provided in the context of a graduate-level education course, with suggestions for other content areas where similar designs may be applicable.
