The general problem that paternalists and antipaternalists debate is the extent to which one can legitimately make decisions about one’s own body or life, or the extent to which this can cause harm to oneself (or what may be widely regarded as such). More specifically, paternalists and antipaternalists debate highly controversial moral and legal issues about the legitimacy or illegitimacy of practices such as prostitution, religious flagellation, the sale and use of hard drugs, euthanasia, assisted suicide, extreme sports, and practices at the far end of the spectrum, such as selling one’s own body parts.
