The Robotic Rectus Abdominis Muscle (RRAM) Flap for Reconstruction in the Pelvis

Robotic surgery has become a burgeoning field due in no small part to the significant advantages that robotic platforms and instrumentation have compared to not only standard open surgical approaches, but also minimally invasive endoscopic, laparoscopic, and thoracoscopic approaches. Like other minimally invasive approaches, robotic surgery minimizes incision length and the associated morbidity, decreases pain, and has the potential to decrease hospital length of stay. However, unlike endoscopic-, laparoscopic-, and thoracoscopic-based procedures, robotic surgical platforms have improved visualization and magnification, increased maneuverability and precision in tight and difficult to access body cavities like the deep pelvis, elimination of tremor, and the ability for a single surgeon to utilize multiple robotic arms for simultaneous retraction and dissection among the many advantages. Various surgical subspecialties including general surgery, surgical oncology, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, urology, gynecology, otolaryngology, and thoracic surgery are now routinely utilizing robotic surgery platforms, and these techniques are quickly becoming the standard for many different procedures.
