First, the chapter draws on its historical development to explain its significance as a pedagogical framework for understanding the relationship between learning and teaching and the subject matter. Secondly, the chapter reviews how variation theory has been used in research on religious education and adopted to inform understanding of pedagogy in critical religious education. Finally, the chapter draws on the notion of the object of learning and examples of practice to emphasize the importance of variation theory for teaching so that learning can take place in religious education.
