Impacts of Mining on Biodiversity in the Region
摘要
Addressing biodiversity loss induced by the environmental impacts of mining in Zambia and the DR Congo is crucial because of the immense ecological significance of the Copperbelt region. Both countries boast rich and diverse ecosystems, ranging from the miombo woodlands in Zambia to the Congo Basin forests in the DR Congo, which is the second largest rainforest in the world. These ecosystems are not only home to countless species, many of which are endemic and endangered, but they also provide essential services such as carbon sequestration, water purification, and climate regulation. Mining activities—often occurring in areas of high ecological value—pose a direct threat to these critical ecosystems through deforestation, habitat destruction, and pollution. Dealing with biodiversity loss would highlight the urgent need to balance economic development with the preservation of the natural heritage that sustains life and livelihoods in the region.
