Biometric Fingerprint Identification Using the Frustrated Total Internal Reflection Method

This article is aimed at developing a biometric fingerprint identification system using the frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) method. This method is based on the physical phenomenon where light, reflecting inside a transparent medium, is interrupted at the points of contact with an object, in this case—the skin of a finger. These interruptions create unique fingerprint images, which can be digitized and used for further biometric authentication. The main goal of the project is to improve the accuracy and speed of fingerprint identification by leveraging the advantages of FTIR, such as high detail of skin texture and enhanced fingerprint contrast.
