Copy That: Deciphering Hannah Weiner’s Code
摘要
This chapter examines the poetry and art of Hannah Weiner, focussing on her code poems and performance pieces, many of which were published in 0 to 9. This body of work not only foresees Weiner’s later poetry (which was praised by the Language poets in the 1970s and 1980s), but it also shows how Weiner appropriated found systems and texts to create metapoems and metatexts that question the nature (and limits) of communication. Weiner’s work is seen as putting linear communication under significant stress and, by breaking down its systems and codes, exposing its problematic ideologies and entrenched assumptions. The chapter also considers how (despite their similar methods and concerns) Weiner’s work contrasts with Acconci’s and argues that her emphasis on social intercourse and inclusivity reflects the participatory nature of the magazine culture that 0 to 9 promoted.
