Introduction: No New York
摘要
This chapter examines how 0 to 9 embraced an experimental, interdisciplinary approach to literature and art and fostered a creative environment where poetry and post-minimal art coexisted without rigid definitions. It also considers how and why Vito Acconci and Bernadette Mayer distanced themselves from the then dominant New York School of poetry and its aesthetic of self-expression. Noting the magazine’s sympathies for impersonality, rationality, and logic, this chapter argues that 0 to 9, by channelling the influences of structuralism, cybernetics, and information theory, aligned closely with Jack Burnham’s concept of post-formalist systems aesthetics and the period’s pronounced interest in informatics and communication theory.
