This chapter explores the potential of blockchain and decentralized finance (DeFi) to advance financial inclusion in Africa. Despite progress in mobile money and fintech adoption, millions remain excluded from formal financial systems due to high costs, limited infrastructure, and institutional barriers. DeFi offers a transformative alternative by enabling peer-to-peer financial services through blockchain technology, eliminating intermediaries, and lowering transaction costs. The chapter examines key concepts, real-world use cases, and opportunities presented by DeFi, including improved transparency, autonomy, and cross-border integration. It also critically assesses the risks such as regulatory uncertainty, digital illiteracy, and cybersecurity threats, and outlines strategic pathways for inclusive DeFi development. These include regulatory reform, digital infrastructure investment, education, and support for local innovation. The chapter concludes that with the right governance and ecosystem support, DeFi can become a catalyst for equitable and sustainable financial systems across the continent.
