“Communication Across Borders” was a Spring 2022 class for English language learners that focused on the theme of language and its modifications in moments of cross-cultural encounters. Assignments and class discussions did not merely, on the part of the students, lead to an appreciation of the interplay between language and culture, as well as a recognition of the challenges associated with (as one student put it) “transcoding language”; rather, what emerged was a new sense of agency regarding the crafting of language. The students in the class developed an awareness of their own identities as multicompetent users and creators of languages, to borrow a term from Vivian Cook (1999), and consciously rejected the outdated deficit model about the supposedly inept language learner. This chapter shows how translation and multilingualism in the class readings represented a constant crossing between languages, and, importantly, a “cross-stitching” of languages, a simultaneity of languages.
