The Classic Maya (A.D. 250–850) built pole-and-thatch salt kitchens along the shores of the seasonally hypersaline Punta Ycacos Lagoon in southern Belize. The wooden posts of these buildings were preserved in anaerobic red mangrove peat (Rhizophora mangle), which accumulated due to sea-level rise. The lower portions of the building posts and other construction wood were preserved where they had been driven into the peat. Ethnographic and ethnohistoric analogies with traditional Maya pole-and-thatch buildings suggest that a similar construction strategy was used in antiquity, varying according to locally available trees. Ethnographic analogy to modern and historic salt works in the Maya area and beyond provides a model for identifying salt production and evaluating ancient activities associated with the pole-and-thatch structures submerged beneath the sea floor in Punta Ycacos Lagoon.
